Fingal, translated into English from Gallic. Richard Fitzsimons,
Dublin: 1762. 302pp, plus advertisment, preface and
dissertation. A very early, but not quite first edition of
Fingal. These were poems by Ossian, claimed to have been translated
from Gallic by Macpherson, but which includes much original writing
by him. The later German translation by Harold was used as the
source of several Schubert songs. The first edition was published in
London in December 1761, but dated 1762: this copy is from that
year, but published in Dublin - and thus is probably the first Irish
edition. 12mo, original leather, which is split in mid spine, so the
book is effectively in 2 halves, held together by cords. Both covers
nearly detached. Signature on title page, end papers somewhat
browned, contents generally very crisp and clean with slight foxing. |
