Schubert First and Early Editions

When Schubert died at the age of just 31, only 100 or so of his approximately 1000 works had been published. These were not particularly representative of his output, as there was a disproportionate bias towards songs, piano duets and collections of dances, which were 'popular' and thus easier to sell. Few chamber works were published, and no symphonies.
The very first Schubert work to appear in print was a song, Erlafsee which appeared in 1818 as a supplement to a 'pictorial pocket book'. In the next 10 years several other songs first appeared as supplements to various journals, especially the 'Wiener Moden-Zeitung'. These editions are especially prized.
Despite several attempts, Schubert could not initially find a publisher prepared to publish his works. The first 14 Opus numbers were published on a commission basis by Cappi and Diabelli. These were individually signed by the composer with a 'control mark' and number. Deutsch estimated that only a few hundred of each were printed. These are therefore now rare and highly sought after. Schubert later sold the rights to these works to Diabelli, and thus lifetime editions of these works exist, printed from the original plates, but without the control marks.
After his death, most, but not all of Schuberts unpublished works were acquired by Diabelli, a few being acquired by other publishers. Most of these works were then published over the next 30 years. From 1830 to 1850, Diabelli produced the 'Nachlass', 50 books of Posthumous Songs. A 'complete' Schubert edition (the 'Gesamtausgabe') was eventually produced by Breitkopf and Härtel in time for the birth centenary in 1897.
